Trail Tools has no account, no login and no server of its own. What you put into the app stays on your iPhone. Two things necessarily leave it, and both are described below.
What stays on your iPhone
All of it. None of the following is sent anywhere, and we cannot see any of it:
- The first name or trail name you give for the greeting.
- Your routes and the GPX files you import, including their names and elevation data.
- Your packing list, and which items you have packed or used.
- Downloaded offline maps.
- Tool state, such as the hydration reminder's interval and the times you noted a drink.
- Your settings.
Removing the app removes all of it. There is no copy elsewhere to delete.
What leaves your iPhone
Your position, to Apple, for the weather. To show local conditions the app sends your coordinates to Apple's WeatherKit service. Apple states that it does not associate this location with any Apple ID and uses it only to answer the request. See Apple's Weather & Privacy notice. If you decline location access, the app works without weather.
The map area you are looking at, to whoever draws the map. A map is drawn by fetching tiles as you pan and zoom, so whoever draws it necessarily learns which part of the world you asked for, and sees your device's IP address. You choose which company that is, under Settings → Map source:
- Apple Maps. Tiles come from Apple. Apple states that Maps does not associate this with your Apple ID, and uses identifiers that reset rather than anything tied to you. See Apple's Location Services & Privacy notice.
- Mapbox. Tiles come from Mapbox, which receives the area requested and your IP address. See the Mapbox privacy policy. The Mapbox SDK also collects usage telemetry of its own by default — a device identifier, the device model, the screen and so on — and Trail Tools switches that off at startup, before any map is drawn. What cannot be switched off is Mapbox counting monthly users for billing; that count carries no information about what you looked at.
Downloading maps for offline use is a Mapbox feature, so it makes Mapbox requests even if you have since switched to Apple Maps. Once an area is downloaded it is drawn from your iPhone, with no further request to anyone.
Location
Location is used for exactly two things: showing the weather where you are, and showing your position on the map. Follow-Me also uses it while the screen is off, so it can tell you when you have left your route — that happens entirely on the phone, and no position is transmitted for it. You can withdraw location access at any time in iOS Settings.
Notifications
Reminders, such as the hydration tool's, are scheduled locally by your iPhone. Nothing is sent through a server, and there are no push notifications from us.
Analytics and tracking
There is none. The app contains no analytics, no advertising identifier, no third-party tracking and no cross-app or cross-site tracking of any kind. Nothing about how you use the app is reported back.
Children
Trail Tools is not directed at children and collects no personal data from anyone.
Changes
If the app ever starts doing something that is not described here, this page will be updated before that version is released, and the date at the top will change.
